According to allegations, the Faculty of Medicine Foundation is in the spotlight with corruption claims. It has been alleged that there is corruption in the Faculty of Medicine Foundation which is a part of Marmara University’s Faculty of Medicine. It was claimed that the foundation made expenditures beyond its purpose and that the money collected for medical students in need was used for the private expenses of the rector, dean and other board members. An investigation into the foundation has been requested. Allegations have emerged regarding a foundation associated with Marmara University’s Faculty of Medicine, one of the most prestigious universities in Turkey. It has been claimed that the Faculty of Medicine Foundation, which has become a source of significant unrest among the university’s faculty members, is facing serious accusations of corruption. According to reports received by news centers, it is alleged that the foundation, established with the aim of providing scholarships to low-income medical faculty students, has made unauthorized expenditures. The faculty members, who were disturbed by this situation, requested that the documents and all money inflows and outflows be examined.
TRUSTEE REVIEW CONDUCTED EARLIER
The following statements were included in the continuation of the statement letter:
The foundation, which was established with the purpose of providing scholarships to low-income medical faculty students and generating resources for scientific activities, is facing serious allegations of misusing a substantial amount of money it obtained after selling its private hospital. There are claims that the foundation has spent the money in various places, deviating from its intended purpose. The foundation had previously faced similar allegations, which led to the appointment of a trustee. However, after the trustee transferred his duties, the foundation has once again been shaken by corruption allegations.The foundation’s General Assembly founding members’ requests to audit the foundation’s expenditures and request a breakdown of expenditures have been consistently denied by the foundation management.
The members of the general assembly are not informed in any way about how and where they spend the large amount of money they received from the sale of the hospital. It is known that the significant amount of money in the foundation’s treasury, which was intended to support poor medical faculty students, has been used for the personal expenses of the rector, dean, and other members of the board of directors (such as cars, drivers, entertainment expenses, etc.). Some members of the General Assembly have also filed complaints with the General Directorate of Foundations, and it is expected that an investigation will be conducted by the General Directorate in this regard. It is stated that the General Directorate of Foundations, which oversees foundations, needs to conduct an audit as soon as possible, as otherwise irreversible damages may occur.
ALLEGATIONS WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE PRESIDENCY
In the letter, it is alleged that individuals who were previously accused of corruption have become executives of the foundation again. It states, “The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, who is also the President of the Foundation, is accused of acting in tandem with the University Rector, who chairs the General Assembly of the Foundation, in all matters and exhibiting an exclusionary attitude towards the faculty members who are responsible for safeguarding the interests of the foundation.” This situation is another cause of unrest. The fact that the Rector of the University appointed his own Vice Rector to the management of the foundation and appointed his very close financial and economic advisors as the auditors of the foundation shows that he is seeking to control the Faculty of Medicine Foundation. Furthermore, the appointment of another faculty member who previously played a role in appointing a trustee to the foundation as the director of their own school and their subsequent appointment to the foundation’s management has caused outrage among medical faculty members. The reappointment of individuals previously accused of corruption through the foundation has raised further questions. The current usage and allocation of the substantial amount of income handed over by the trustee to the foundation remain unknown. Despite the persistent and justified demands of the General Assembly members, no explanations have been provided regarding the expenditures made. This situation is so disturbing that the faculty members of the Faculty of Medicine are preparing to collectively appeal to the President of the Foundation and the Rector. Despite the clear guidelines in the foundation’s charter on how income should be used for public benefit, the inability to provide documentation for the expenditures has become an unsettling topic circulating within the education and scientific community. The fact that the University Rector spends a significant portion of their time dealing with the Faculty of Medicine Foundation has also been met with astonishment by other faculty members. The mystery, uncertainty, and attempts to cover up where the foundation’s income is being spent have deeply affected both past and present faculty members who have dedicated themselves to the foundation for years. The matter will also be brought to the attention of the Presidency.”
