Konya is a special province, with the history dated back to thousands of years and hosted many civilizations throughout the centuries. Çatalhöyük, located within the borders of our province, is among the oldest living spaces of the humankind, dating back 10 thousand years. Many civilizations have been born, flourished and developed in the province of Konya since then.
A CULINARY CULTURE OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS
Konya, hosting many historical values, also offers a magnificent culinary culture. The one and only chef with a sepulcher built in his name in the world, Âteşbâz-ı Velî has lived in Konya. Served as the capital of the Seljuk State of Asia Minor for more than 200 years, Konya hosts a culture with the fine examples of the palace cuisine. Konya Metropolitan Municipality takes substantial steps in terms of gastronomy tourism and organizes events for the purpose of introducing the richness of Konya cuisine to the entire world, acting with the motto; “food is a civilization in this land”.
A CITY OF CYCLING
Konya is among the provinces having the most cyclists in Turkey in accordance with its geographical structure. Pilot projects have been accomplished in Konya by the Metropolitan Municipality to serve as role models to the entire Turkey to increase the use of bicycles.
The avenues newly constructed in Konya, being well ahead in the entire Turkey with cycle lanes of 550 kilometers long, are absolutely equipped with cycle lanes. New cycle lanes of 87 kilometers long shall be initiated to be constructed with the new planning.
Turkey’s first bicycle tramway put into service last year draws a great interest. Recently, bicycle parking areas with two-storey have been constructed. With the two-storey bicycle parking areas constructed in the indoor parking lots and in the crowded areas of the city, dwellers of Konya can safely park more bicycles in the same place without paying any fees.
Certain endeavors and works are available in the province such as bicycle repair stations, bicycle bridges, bicycle traffic lights, bicycle waiting stations, Smart Cycling Transportation System (SCTS), buses enabling the assembly of bicycle transport apparatuses, and trainings aiming to raise awareness and empathy towards the bicycles. Turkey’s first Olympic Velodrome is to be introduced to Konya by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The objective of these endeavors is to have Konya as one of the world’s bicycle cities.
A SUBSTANTIAL CENTER FOR AGRICULTURE, INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE
Having an area of 42,000 km. sq. located the heart of Anatolia and with a population of over 2.2 million, Konya is a region with high educational level with its approx. 150,000 students studying in the five universities of the province. It is possible to travel from Konya to Ankara, Eskişehir and Istanbul by high-speed railway. Also, flights are available from Konya Airport to Istanbul and Izmir.
The region is a substantial center for agricultural, industrial and commerce of our country with more than 45,000 enterprises, more than 350 foreign capital companies, 9 Organized Industrial Zones and 2 technology development areas.
Machinery manufacturing, automotive spare parts industry, metal casting, food industry, on-board equipment manufacturing, food, plastic packaging, shoe manufacturing, agricultural machinery and equipment and milling machine manufacturing come to the fore as competitive sectors within the region.
Serving as Turkey’s grain silo, Konya is ranked as Turkey’s leading province in production flour, salt and sugar. It is also the only province in Turkey extracting primary aluminum mineral. It is Turkey’s leading province in manufacturing of agricultural machinery and equipment. The province dominates 45 percent of the Turkish market with regards to the metal processing. It has a share of 70 percent of the Turkish market with regards to on-board equipment. The province is ranked within the top five in Turkey with regards to the defense industry. The province is further ranked 12th in Turkey with exports exceeding 2 billion dollars in the year 2020. Exports are performed to more than 170 countries.
SHINING OUT WITH ITS YOUNG POPULATION
Having a population of over 2 million, Konya has more population than more than 50 countries in the world. It is the 7th largest city in Turkey in terms of population. It is also largest city in Turkey in terms of surface area.
The population group under the age of 35, referring to the young population, corresponds to 55.1 percent of the total population in Konya. The total population of people under 35 is 1,229,811. In consideration of the distribution of the age groups of the population of Konya, the population at the age of employment within the age group of 15-64 compromises 66.6 percent of the total population. 24 percent of the population of the province is within the age group of 0-14, and 9.5 percent is within the age group of 64 and over.

Konya has many places and venues to experience and visit such as Science Center, Garden of Tropical Butterflies, Konya Panorama, Garden of Ancestors (Ecdat Bahçesi), Sille, Kilistra, Alaeddin Hill, Ince Minaret Madrasa, Meram Vineyards, Yerköprü Falls, Nasreddin Hodja and Shams Tabrizi.
